Parents Learn Together at Curriculum Evening
Parents of girls in Years 1 to 5 came ‘back to school’ in November to find out more about the excellent programme in place for teaching reading in the Junior Department. Mrs Fowler, Head of the Junior Department, began the evening by explaining that, “Learning to read is the most important thing that your daughter will learn to do. Everything else depends upon it so as a staff we put as much energy as we possibly can into making sure that every single girl learns to read as quickly as possible in a positive and supportive climate.”
Parents involved themselves in practising phonic sounds, discussed with each other and staff what factors ensure excellence in reading and participated in a teacher-led guided reading session. Feedback from parents about the event was very positive; they felt more informed about what it means to be an excellent reader and how they could support their daughters at home.
School and parents working together ensures that all of the girls not only learn to read but also develop a love of books and literature.
