Foundation Unit Curriculum

At Leicester High School for Girls we provide a creative curriculum based around the Cornerstones Curriculum, a nationally recognised approach for delivering outstanding learning opportunities for children.

In the Foundation Unit the curriculum is planned using the Early Years Framework with three prime areas:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development

and four specific areas of learning:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World  
  • Expressive Arts and Design.

Pupils are introduced to synthetic phonics using ReadWriteInc materials, and early writing and numeracy are encouraged across all learning opportunities. Pupils are regularly taken on visits to broaden their understanding of a topic, and a woodland area provides a different learning environment on a regular basis. Communication between home and school is highly effective, and parents are invited to share in their daughter’s learning journey at regular intervals by attending workshops and events in school.

All the girls spend a high proportion of their time in structured play. They are encouraged to investigate independently the world around them through their play. All pupils are encouraged to be independent learners and to develop their creative thinking skills. The girls gain a thorough grounding in the basic academic skills, which lays the foundations for the rest of their lives.
