Entrance Examinations & Assessments
Foundation Unit: Years F and R, age 3-5
Girls are welcome to join the Foundation class immediately after their third birthday and the Reception class at 4+. For the assessment, which usually lasts from 9.30-11.00am, girls spend time in the Foundation Unit being encouraged to become involved in a range of activities.
The staff use the opportunity to assess their skills, such as numbers, colours, shapes, pencil control, letters and sounds. They also observe the girls’ social skills and their interaction with others in the classroom and in the playground.
The Head of the Junior Department will spend time meeting and talking with parents.
We can assess at any time, but we also have a set day to link with September start dates.
Assessment Day 2018: Saturday 20 January 2018 9.30-11.30am.
Junior Department: Years 1-5, age 6-10
Girls entering Years 1 and 2 have an assessment morning from 9-11.30am, at a time to suit prospective parents.
Girls will join in with the learning programme in their age appropriate class.
Reading, writing and maths tasks will be undertaken to give the teacher an understanding of the level to which each girl is working. They will also spend break time in the playground being observed by staff. This will be used to assess their social interaction with staff and pupils.
Girls entering Years 3-5 have an assessment day lasting from 9.00am-2.30pm, at a time to suit prospective parents.
Girls are tested in mathematics, English – which includes a comprehension exercise, short and long writing tasks such as a letter, report or story – reading and spelling. Girls will also spend time in the classroom and in the playground at break and lunch times, which will enable staff to assess the social interaction with the pupils and other staff members.
Senior School: Years 6-11, age 10-16
Applications are welcome at any time for Years 6-10, but there is always a set date for examinations in January which links with the September start date for that year.
Entrance Examination 2018 date: Saturday 20 January 2018 9am-12.30pm.

The entrance examination for Years 6-10 consists of papers in English, mathematics and a reasoning test.
The English examination will consist of a reading task and a piece of extended writing.
The mathematics examinations are designed to provide girls with the opportunity to demonstrate their ability in mathematics, according to their age of entry and level of experience.The examinations last for one hour each.
The reasoning test lasts for 1 hour 15 minutes, and consists of three separate sections. Questions will be of a verbal, numerical and perceptual nature.
Sixth Form: Years 12-13, age 17-18
Girls wishing to join the Sixth Form in Year 12 must have at least a Grade B in six academically rigorous and relevant subjects at GCSE, including English and maths. A satisfactory report from the current school will also be required. Girls who are interested in joining the Sixth Form are welcome to spend the morning with us.
