Did you know...?
50 girls learn music on nine
different instruments, and 40
girls have speech and drama
lessons every week, all in
addition to regular lessons.
Expressive Arts
We have a ‘can-do’ philosophy at
Leicester High. This is epitomised
by the vibrant Expressive Arts
Department which encompasses five
disciplines: music, drama, art, dance and
photography. The enthusiastic teaching
team provides many opportunities, from
orchestras and annual productions to
art residentials and professional dance
workshops. As one of our staff said:
‘If the girls have an idea, I’ll go with
it.’ So if your daughter is creative and
bursting with ideas, she will be able
to express them here. You won’t find
rows of identical paintings on the walls
of the art rooms, because we don’t
believe in dictating a style; we prefer
to encourage creative freedom and
individual expression. In art and design
GCSE for example, if nine girls have
nine different ideas, we’ll do everything
we can to accommodate them all. Not
everyone has to paint, not everyone has
to sew, and not everyone has to work
in clay. The benefit of smaller classes
comes to the fore here, but it’s also
about being flexible and putting the
girls first. When the Headmaster spoke
to Year 11s about A level choices,
four girls asked if photography could
be offered because they had enjoyed
Photography Club so much, and so we
introduced it for that group. Whether
your daughter is our next leading lady,
or has just started drama lessons,
we will always listen to her ideas and
encourage her all the way.
