What is a scholarship, who can apply for one and when?
A scholarship is a prestigious award which recognises a very high standard of achievement in a competitive examination or
assessment. It carries with it the title of ‘scholar’ for the successful girl, and depending on the scholarship, the expectation is that
the girl will embrace school life and be a role model to other pupils in her area of excellence. It can involve financial support from
5%-100% of the school fees, depending on the scholarship. We have different scholarships and eligibility criteria. Girls already
in Year 6 at Leicester High may apply or will be encouraged to apply for Bishop Williams scholarships. Music scholarships are
available from Years 4-11 and are applied for annually. See the website for full details, but a summary can be seen below.
Music, Years 4-12
Criteria
Years 4-6 grades 1/2
Years 7-9 grades 2/3
Years 10-11 grades 3-5
Year 12 grades 6+
Concession
£350 per term: ‘Scholarships’
£150 per term: ‘Awards’
How is it assessed?
All candidates will need to play two contrasting pieces
on two instruments, one of which can be voice. External
candidates will take the entrance examination in addition.
When is it assessed?
January, for entry in Years 4-12
Duration
1 year.
This Scholarship can be re-applied for annually.
Headmaster’s, Years 7-11
Criteria
Academic; entirely educated in the state sector.
Concession
80% reduction of fees.
How is it assessed?
Scholarship examination and interview.
When is it assessed?
February, for entry in Year 7.
Duration
5 years.
Bishop Williams, Years 7-13
Criteria
Academic.
Concession
5%-10% reduction of fees.
How is it assessed?
Entrance examination.
When is it assessed?
January, for entry in Year 7.
Duration
7 years.
Ogden Trust, Years 12-13
Criteria
Minimum 6 GCSEs at Grade A including physics and
maths or dual or triple science; previously educated
entirely in the state sector; applying to take science
subjects at A level including physics and maths, but not
biology unless taken with further maths (to A2); joint
gross parental income of less than £50,000; British
nationality; intending to go on to take a physics degree
at university; Leicester High would make a visit to the
related candidate’s home before an Ogden Award
is made.

100% reduction of fees.

Scholarship examination.
When is it assessed?
February, for entry in Year 12.
