Leicester High School for Girls Announces New Poet Laureates

On National Poetry Day in October, the English Department of Leicester High School for Girls revealed that they were once again inviting applications for the position of school Poet Laureate.

As part of the application process, students were tasked with writing three poems on topics of their choice. The English Department created a shortlist from the initial 32 entries and, after much deliberation, the incumbent LHS Poet Laureates made the final decision.

In assembly, Mrs. Penney, Head of the English Department, proudly introduced the new LHS Poet Laureates for the academic year 2023-4:

Lower School Poet Laureate: Raeya P

Middle School Poet Laureate: Matilda C

Upper School Poet Laureate: Hafsah H

Mrs Penney said, “Our new young poets were awarded with book tokens and delicious chocolates, instead of the traditional port wine!  They will soon be put to work penning poems to be presented at our School Carol Service on 5th December.

Last year's laureates, Lucy J, Zahra A, and Sabine S, have decided to continue their roles as laureates and will serve as mentors for the new recruits. This creative partnership between experienced and emerging poets promises to produce a wealth of outstanding poetry.
