Mr Alan Whelpdale
Head of Junior Department
Mrs Sarah Davies
The Junior Department is where a girl's learning journey begins. Girls settle quickly into their classes, making friends and forming strong bonds with their teachers. Feeling at ease amongst their peers enables all girls to develop confidence and make outstanding progress in their learning. High expectations ensure that every girl reaches her full potential.
At Leicester High School for Girls we provide a creative curriculum based around the Cornerstones Curriculum, a nationally recognised approach for delivering outstanding learning opportunities for children. The Cornerstones Curriculum is a creative and thematic approach to learning that is mapped to the 2014 Primary National Curriculum to ensure comprehensive coverage of national expectations. Our curriculum is delivered through Imaginative Learning Projects (ILP) which provides a rich menu of exciting and motivating learning activities that make creative links between all aspects of our children’s learning.
Each class is taught primarily by the same teacher for most curriculum subjects, but music, PE and French are delivered by a specialist teacher. Homework is set to reinforce and extend the girls' learning, whilst enabling them to develop independence in their own work. A full induction for life in the Senior School takes place during the Summer Term of Year 5.
Trips and visits are wide-ranging and take place whenever possible so that learning is brought to life. In Years 4 and 5, girls participate in a residential trip which aims to develop their independence and teamwork skills. An outstanding program of extra-curricular clubs is on offer and is regularly updated with new opportunities including; Latin, Gardening, Debating, Netball and Tennis.
