Further Education - Sixth Form Department
Mr Alan Whelpdale
Head of Sixth Form
Miss Kam Purewal
The Sixth Form at Leicester High is an excellent place to study A Levels. Not only does it allow students to study in small classes with individual attention from expert teachers, it fully prepares girls for life beyond school so that they have all the necessary skills to be successful in whatever they choose to do. See the Sixth Form prospectus here.
In the Sixth Form the girls can choose from a wide range of over 20 A levels. Each girl selects three subjects which will relate to the course they wish to pursue at university. There is also the opportunity to study the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). In addition the girls will have an opportunity to partake in a range of enrichment activities such as DofE Gold, budgeting and cooking courses which will help shape independent, confident and well-rounded young women. There are also many leadership opportunities available to girls throughout their two years in the Sixth Form. Some become Prefects in Year 13, whilst others take an active role in the Year 12 Charity committee. Girls learn to organise events, liaise with companies, be leaders and make huge profits for charity. These opportunities will enhance UCAS applications and set our girls apart from other applicants.
Almost all girls choose to go onto university after Leicester High and study a wide range of subjects including law, medicine and science. The support and attention our girls receive from the Sixth Form pastoral team in completing their UCAS applications is second to none. In the summer term, Year 12 girls attend UCAS conferences and training, with specialist expert speakers. Once they return in Year 13 they are ready for the application process. Medics, lawyers and Oxbridge candidates receive extra support owing to the competition for these, but all girls have practice interviews, often with specialists in their chosen fields. In addition every girl is interviewed by the Headmaster, Mr Alan Whelpdale, who also reviews each personal statement and reference.
The Sixth Form students have their own common room, and study areas that they can use for their independent study. However, they also have access to all the facilities across the school and can contribute to whole school life as Prefects, assisting on open days and mentoring younger students.
At Leicester High we want to develop young women who are confident, independent and well-equipped for university life and beyond. By working closely together with students, staff and parents, we can provide the girls with the support, attention and unique enrichment opportunities that will enable them to flourish and be successful.
