DofE Gold Practice
19 girls in Y12 faced a tough challenge in Snowdonia in sunshine!
Towards the end of the Easter holidays, School ran the Gold DofE practice expedition in Snowdonia for 19 girls In Year 12. Mrs Davison and Miss Brice accompanied the trip along with Mrs Martin, Andy, Chris and Ian, the instructors from First 4 Adventure UK.
Everyone arrived at Llanberis Youth Hostel the day before the expedition which allowed groups to settle, sort out kit, check routes and eat lovely hot dinners prepared by the hostel. Day 1 was a hike up to the first wild camp, by a small lake called Llyn Ffynnon-y-gwas, with Snowdon rising behind. The weather was amazingly good, with perfect views and the girls were able to enjoy cooking out as the sun went down over the mountains. All 3 groups made the summit of Snowdon the following day before making their way down to the next campsite in Beddgelert. It was a tough and challenging day but the groups did brilliantly. Day 3 led the girls over through the forest and mountains south of Snowdon with day 4 being a really useful consolidation day of micro-navigation before finishing in Café Siabod in Capel Curig for cheesy chips and final reviews.
Despite some individual highs and lows, the groups worked extremely hard, supported each other at every stage and showed great determination. Mrs Martin is confident that they will do really well in their qualifier in July. The motto (from the Cinderella film!) was “have courage and be kind” and the girls embodied this every step of the way. Well done!
