Salter's Chemistry Festival 'a chance in a lifetime' says pupil.
On the 23 April, Sienna Kaur, Debadrita Dass, Laila Sheikh and Mahbubah Durojaiye attended the Salter's Chemistry Festival at Leicester University. We completed two challenges where we worked independently and as a team. The first challenge was using forensic chemistry to decide the chief suspect of a crime. This involved using chromatography, testing for the non-metal component of a salt and finding out whether a substance was an acid or an alkali. The second task was to create a universal indicator from 8 different dyes. Our team found this exercise more difficult than the first, but we enjoyed the challenge. We managed to differentiate between three types of substances of differing acidity and alkalinity. We learnt a lot of components of chemistry and new vocabulary. Overall it was a chance in a lifetime! The highlight of the day was the first challenge, and we also enjoyed the close of the day as there was a chemistry show where we saw a series of extremely entertaining experiements.
