Head of Science Celebrates National Recognition at Tes Schools Awards 2026

Leicester High School for Girls' Head of Science, Andrew McMurray, attended the prestigious Tes Schools Awards 2026 ceremony at the iconic Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Friday 19 June, following his shortlisting for the national Subject Lead of the Year (Secondary) award.

Hosted by comedian Katherine Ryan, the annual awards ceremony welcomed hundreds of teachers, school leaders and education professionals from across the UK for an evening of celebration, networking and a gala dinner recognising excellence in education.

The Tes Schools Awards celebrate the schools and educators who are transforming outcomes for pupils and setting new standards across the sector. This year's event attracted a record number of nominations since the awards began in 2009, making Andrew's place on the shortlist a significant achievement.

Reflecting on the evening, Andrew said:

"It was an honour to attend the Tes Schools Awards and to be recognised alongside so many talented and dedicated educators from across the country. The evening was an opportunity to celebrate the incredible work taking place in schools and to share ideas with colleagues who are equally passionate about inspiring young people.

"Being shortlisted is a reflection of the commitment shown by everyone involved in Science at Leicester High School for Girls. I am proud to be part of a school that places such importance on curiosity, opportunity and a love of learning."

Andrew's nomination recognised his commitment to making Science accessible, engaging and inspiring for pupils from Early Years Foundation Stage through to Sixth Form. Through outreach initiatives, partnerships and enrichment opportunities, he continues to encourage more girls to pursue STEM subjects and careers.

The awards ceremony also provided an opportunity to network with education leaders from across the UK and share best practice in teaching and learning.

Everyone at Leicester High School for Girls is immensely proud to see Andrew recognised on a national stage. His shortlisting reflects both his dedication and the school's commitment to providing exceptional STEM education and inspiring the next generation of scientists.
