Leicester High School for Girls is delighted to announce that its student team, Jasmin and Simreat of Mechanicus, has been awarded 3rd place in the 2024/25 ICE CityZen Award, a national competition run by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
The CityZen Award celebrates innovative and sustainable solutions to real-world engineering challenges and aims to inspire the next generation of civil engineers. The Mechanicus team impressed the panel of expert judges with their creative and forward-thinking project, securing a top-three finish among entries from across the UK. Their idea focused on reducing the carbon footprint of new homes by repurposing landfill waste into construction bricks using pyrolysis – a process in which high temperatures are used to change the chemical composition of substances.
As part of their prize, the team has won £500, which will be shared between the school and the students, in recognition of their exceptional achievement and hard work.
Head of Science Andrew McMurray commented:
“We are incredibly proud of our Mechanicus team. Their success reflects not only their commitment to problem-solving and teamwork, but also the high standards of STEM education at Leicester High. Competitions like the CityZen Award are vital for inspiring young women to see themselves as future engineers and innovators.”
In further celebration of their success, the Mechanicus team has been invited to attend a special lunch with ICE Senior Vice President David Porter at the prestigious ICE Headquarters in London on Thursday 26 June.
This outstanding achievement highlights Leicester High School for Girls' ongoing dedication to promoting STEM opportunities for girls and developing real-world learning experiences.
