Leicester High School for Girls is delighted to announce that Andrew McMurray, Head of Science, has been shortlisted for Subject Lead of the Year (Secondary) in this year’s Tes Schools Awards - a prestigious national celebration of the UK’s most inspiring teachers and schools from both the state and independent sectors.
Andrew’s shortlisting reflects his commitment to making Science accessible, engaging and inspiring for girls at every stage of their education — from Early Years Foundation Stage through to Sixth Form — as well as his contribution to the wider school community through outreach and enrichment opportunities that promote STEM learning beyond the classroom.
The shortlist was selected by a panel of expert judges, including experienced school leaders and education specialists.
Rod Williams, CEO of Tes, commented:
“This year’s shortlist showcases the exceptional standard of entries across the Tes Schools Awards. Each category highlights schools and individuals who are not only driving meaningful change within their own settings, but also setting a benchmark for the wider sector. The Tes Schools Awards are designed to recognise and elevate this work, celebrating those making a measurable difference to pupils, staff and communities across the UK – and with a record number of nominations received this year, it clearly reinforces the strength and impact being delivered across the UK education sector.”
At Leicester High School for Girls, Andrew has played a key role in developing a strong and inclusive science culture, encouraging curiosity, confidence and ambition in STEM subjects. His leadership supports girls to explore scientific thinking from an early age and continue developing their interests through to A-level and beyond, helping to prepare them for future study and careers in science-related fields.
Headteacher John Partridge said:
“We are really pleased to see Andrew recognised in this way. He has played a central role in building a strong, inclusive culture for Science across the school, helping girls develop confidence, curiosity and ambition in STEM from an early stage. This recognition is thoroughly deserved.”
The awards ceremony will be hosted by award-winning comedian, writer and presenter Katherine Ryan, with winners announced at a gala event on 19 June at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London.
Families interested in seeing the school’s inspiring STEM provision in action are warmly invited to attend Leicester High School for Girls’ Discovery Morning on 13 May, offering an opportunity to meet staff and pupils and experience how girls are supported to develop confidence and curiosity in Science from Early Years through to Sixth Form.
